Our family had the privilege of meeting Sophie last winter when she shared a hospital room with our mother, Sheila Gale, at the Health Sciences Hospital in St. John's last winter. Over the few weeks of our daily visits, we had many lovely conversations with Sophie and learned of her intelligence and incredible compassion. Despite her own serious health issues, she was more concerned about others. Early on in our chats we learned of a unique coincidence and of Sophie's remarkable memory. When she heard our surname, she said she could remember a man with that surname who worked on a bridge in her community when she was a little girl. The man was our grandfather, a bridge contractor from Bonds Path, Placentia. My Mother had a photograph from that timeframe and often wondered who some of the people were. Sophie was able to fill in the gaps after all those years. My Mother, sister Pam and I made a special connection with Sophie in those few weeks. Even though we kept in touch, she didn't dwell on her own health, always sounding positive and strong. Her passing has saddened us a great deal. We will miss her gentle voice and lovely presence. We had just sent her the popular AWESOME book because to us, she was awesome...one of those rare individuals who make an impression on you that will last a lifetime. She loved her family very much. We hope your memories of this grand lady help you through this difficult time.

Alex, Rex, Sandy, Stella, Sadie, Louise, Gerald & Don:
I was so shocked to hear of Sophie's passing as I was not aware of her being ill. I am so grateful that I took the time to visit with Stella, Sophie & Alex on my short visit home this summer. Sophie and I had a great time looking at old photos and reliving good times. I hope that God will help you deal with your loss of a wife, mother, sister and grandmother. I surely will miss seeing her when I visit again, may she rest in peace.
