Please share a memory of Ella to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ella Mary Cheeseman, 87, passed on May 9th 2021 after a brief illness at G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville . Mom, Nan, Aunt Ellie is survived by her children, Lewis Cheeseman of Bridgetown, N.S., Nancy Chan (John) of Winnipeg, MB, Sister Barbara Warenchuk (Paul) of Edmonton, AB, sister in law Eleanor Stoyles of St John’s, grandchildren, Kris (Melissa), Nick, Dan, Mike, and Sarah, great grandchildren Josh, Chase, Phoenix, Serenity, and Justice, and many extended family and friends.

Ellie was pre deceased by her husband Reginald Cheeseman of Burin in 2006.

Ellie was born December 21st, 1933 in Burgeo, NL to Ted and Netta Banfield. She was the 4th of 6 girls and 1 brother. She grew up in a large lively household in Burgeo where she attended school, spent time at the family cabin in Grandy’s Brook and developed her love of dance.

Ellie will be remembered as a strong petite lady with an enormous amount of energy, love of life and family. She never was one to give up a chance to dance and laugh. She loved to sew, knit, crochet and bake and always willing to share her talents. Her biggest passion besides her family was her garden. She turned her rocky coastal home into an oasis of rose bushes and blooms.

She wore many hats in her 87 years: postal worker, bakery owner, seamstress, night school instructor, grocery store clerk, and in her later years a craft fair vendor selling her homemade teddy bears and children’s clothes.

An active member of the Anglican Women’s Association and Hospital Auxiliary, Ellie never shied away from any chance to volunteer.

Ellie was a dotting grandmother and spent much time with her 5 grandchildren. She was always there to participate in their fun, and support them in their interests. Christmas packages from Nan were always an exciting time filled with extra goodies and new mitts for the winter.

To all those whose lives were touch by Mom; wishing you fond memories and look forward to hearing your stories.

Thanks to the Staff of Marystown Retirement Centre for all their loving care, where Mom called home for the past 11 years.

“Burgeo”

Something of our little Town

In a few words I will tell.

Written for our Magazine

Of the School House on the hill.

The name of our town is Burgeo,

Down the hill we oftimes glide,

Our coastal boat carries the name,

It is written on her side.

Noted for its fine harbours,

The lovely Sandbanks too,

It is all part of Burgeo,

Even the place called Bay de Leau.

The Long Reach and the Short Reach,

Names we all know well;

The Fish Plant, the Fisherman’s Hope

Where different kinds of fish they sell

One place before I finish

Grandy’s Brook I must not forget

Watching the leaping salmon

While on its banks I sit.
